• Shared Spaces: From Idea to Implementation

    Shared workspaces are transforming collaboration in the nonprofit and social change sectors. In this session, Eli Malinsky provides a broad overview of the field and reveals the ingredients behind the Centre for Social Innovation’s success. We’ll dig into the tips, warnings and lessons learned from six years of operation. Our goal is to arm you with a clear understanding of the key ingredients of successful shared spaces and explore the “developmental path” to bring your ideas from concept to completion.

    The Centre for Social Innovation (CSI) in Toronto is a shared workspace and community centre for individuals and organizations that are changing the world. With over 20,000 annual visitors and over 200 members, CSI is an internationally recognized leader in the creation and animation of shared workspaces. In winter 2010-11, the Centre for Social Innovation will open the doors to its newest project: a 35,000 sq ft building that will become home to over 300 social change projects.

    evalyn parry is a critically-acclaimed spoken word artist and songwriter based in Toronto. From 19th century cycling heroines to 21st century sailors; from “feminine protection” to bottled water to the quest for the Northwest Passage, evalyn’s outspoken creations hold out a powerful vision of social and personal change, while her irreverent wit holds nothing sacred. Accompanying herself on guitar, water bottle, shruti box and loop pedals, parry shoots from the hip and aims for the heart. Fierce, funny, poignant and provocative, she has been charming audiences at storytelling, poetry, music and theatre festivals from coast to coast of North America. Her work has been widely broadcast and anthologized; she has released three CD’s, written and produced five plays, and her latest musical performance project SPIN (starring The Bicycle as Muse, Musical Instrument, and Agent of Social Change) will premiere at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre in Toronto in March 2011. www.evalynparry.com

    Tanya Davis is a poet. She is a storyteller. She is a musician and a singer-songwriter and she fuses these elements together in a refreshing matrimony of language and sound, side-stepping genre and captivating audiences in the process. Since bursting onto the Halifax music scene in 2006 with her debut, Make a List, Tanya has garnered praise from industry, audience, and peers, as well as multiple award nominations, including one for her sophomore release, Gorgeous Morning, for the 2009 ECMA Female Recording of the Year. She is a 2 time winner in the CBC National Poetry Face-off as well as the Canadian Winner of the 2008 Mountain Stage NewSong contest. In 2009, with support from Bravo, she collaborated with independent filmmaker Andrea Dorfman to produce a short videopoem entitled How to Be Alone; the short has since been featured at numerous film festivals, including The Vancouver Film Fest, The Worldwide Short Film Festival, and the VideoPoetry Festival (Berlin).
