One of the oldest questions in IT gets more and more complicated as new options emerge. It’s a troubling question for new and existing ventures: should you license a commercial enterprise to build an application that to meet the needs of your business or organization, or would it be better to build your own, so that you can track or manage the project as closely as possible? Have you ever paid for a commercial product only to find that it doesn’t meet all of your needs, and you’re stuck with it?

Do you have what it takes to create an IT system in-house? Build-versus-buy decision points remain the same: cost, time to market, skill sets, long-term flexibility and strategic value. We’ve assembled a panel of individuals that have tackled the problem. Experts in the IT field will outline existing and emerging trends. Together they will share their successes and challenges. You’ll likely find a wild mix of approaches that can help you assess whether you need to outsource or whether you have the capacity to build from within.

“Oh man. Six months come and gone.
Looking back on my notes about working here at 10 Carden, I can see my confidence grew quite a bit. I’ve gone from “I’m really excited that people like my input, I’m happy that I haven’t messed up!” to just listing what I’ve done and knowing how it’s helped me improve.
From beginning to end everyone’s been so great and generous, including welcoming me with a day at Hillside; which was a great welcome for a person like me who goes to as many concerts as their wallet will allow, to leaving with a subscription to Alternatives, which will aid me in being even more Environ-Mental with people back home in Montreal.

Volunteering here has unknowingly (even to me) helped out with my shyness, I very rarely would even start a conversation with a stranger before, let alone talk at length about a space and give them a tour. Seems like a small achievement, but for a person who’s heard over and over again that a lack of speaking up is something I should work on (even from teachers throughout elementary to high school, it was always on my report card,) it’s kind of a big deal. As such, I’ve also discovered that sharing my ideas at meetings and writing press releases isn’t nearly as terrifying as I had imagined.

The concept of collaboration is a large aspect of 10 Carden, and it was great to see it happen right before my eyes and to experience it personally. I got to politically geek-out multiple times, whether it was having James Gordon, Guelph’s NDP candidate start volunteering here and getting to talk with him, having the opportunity to hang out and work with Norah of The Council of Canadians, and in doing so talked food safety with Liberal MP Frank Valeriote. I helped out with Streak for Cancer, (which got me in Snap Guelph, awesome.) and got my Katimavik group involved as well. I also did some proof reading and editing at The Peak with Erin War, which I wish I could have done more of, because I am an editing nutcase. I’m glad I did get to do it though. It worked out well too, because apparently editing is War’s least favourite thing to do, and I used to find and highlight the spelling and grammar errors on my detention slips in high school.

So 10 Carden, thanks for giving me the opportunity to collaborate with so many amazing people. But for now I must bid you adieu. Emphasis on “for now”; you’ll definitely be seeing me again”

Social Enterprises and Social Purpose Ventures: where do you fit? November 16th, 4:30-6:00 pm

Are you a start-up with a cause? Does your non-profit operate with a social purpose? Where exactly do you fit on the social innovation spectrum?

There are distinct business models emerging that enable non-profits to support themselves financially in innovative ways instead of relying solely on grants and donations.

At the same time, new business ventures are popping up that have all the money-making sense of a for-profit enterprise, the social goals of the public sector, and the mission-driven passion of a nonprofit organization. Combined, those attributes put market-based solutions to social problems, generating both financial resources and social value.

Essential to the success of these social enterprise endeavours is an effective business model. We will review a number of models to help workshop attendees determine where they fit one the social innovation spectrum, and what business model is most appropriate to power their mission.

Social Accounting, the Social Economy, and Sustainable Local Economies: November 8: 5:30-7:30 pm at 10 Carden

How can social accounting be a useful practical support for your business or community organization? Can it provide a direct connection to sustainable and local economies? What is the link between social accounting and the broader issues within the Social Economy. Are there costs?

Social accounting has been seen by many as a revolution in the way individuals, businesses and communities approach economic activity. Especially appealing is the concept of “triple bottom line” accounting, which is supposed to value the environment (planet), labour (people) and profit in equal measures for economic entities. Author and Associate Professor J.J. McMurtry will lead a discussion on the theory and practice of social accounting, highlighting its usefulness to socially concerned businesses and community organizations, while highlighting its perceived challenges and threats.

J.J. McMurtry is an Associate Professor in the Business and Society Program at York University in Toronto. He has recently published edited collections on the Social Economy (Living Economics: Canadian Perspectives on the Social Economy, Co-operatives, and Community Economic Development, 2010) and Co-operatives (Co-operatives in a Global Economy, 2009) and chapters on Purchasing Policies and Social Accounting (forthcoming 2012). He also has taught for the MBA in Community Economic Development at Cape Breton University and is course director of the Ontario Co-operative Association/Schulich School of Business Co-operative Management Certificate.

Guelph Community Media, Mapping Tools: Tuesday October 4, 5:30-7:30 pm at 10 Carden

This workshop discusses the potential of mapping to strengthen communities’ ability to know their neighbourhood and plan for its future. In cities around the world, community and neighbourhood organizations are using mapping tools to assist them in visioning, planning and advocating for their needs.

This workshop is for local organizations, groups, and businesses engaged in strengthening Guelph’s urban and rural fabric. The concepts and components of community mapping will be described, and ideas from community members might lead towards the implementation of a ‘Guelph Community Media’ system. The workshop will enable:
- ongoing dialogue across Guelph’s neighbourhoods and communities;
- community groups and organizations, who share a passion for healthy, culturally and socially vibrant, sustainable landscapes to publish, share, and discover each other’s visions, plans, ideas, projects, challenges and events on a searchable virtual urban canvas;
- shared asset mapping processes
- viral engagement at the community level
- to learn mapping of content and events, with COMPA’s “landscape pages” publication toolset.

The Centre for Community Mapping (COMAP – comap.ca), a not-for-profit corporation devoted to research and development, creates and deploys strategies for socio-economic, cultural and environmental innovation based on modern information and communications technology. COMAP’s web-based applications use collaborative geomatics, social media and customized applications to support partnerships among members of geographic and virtual communities of practice whose common goal is strengthening civil society within a sustainable economy.

10 Carden is led by Annie O’Donoghue and Julia Grady. The new organization is in the process of incorporating as a not for profit. Our vision is for 10 Carden to become a ‘community hub’ offering not for profit groups, businesses and individuals affordable and accessible shared space.
10 Carden – The Space.
10 Carden has a great store front presence directly across from new City Hall and is perfect for board meetings, large presentations (seating for up to 50), as well as smaller scale meetings and working sessions of 5-6 people as well as collaborative and individual work. Access to this prime location and shared equipment/facilities will help smaller groups with capacity building and let them become more visible in the community.

From Annie and Julia,

“We hope that 10 Carden becomes the place people come together to work for a better Guelph. In co-locating we have better capacity to support one another and work collaboratively when opportunities arise. The project was created in response to groups seeking connectivity. The future hope is that by sharing a space those involved will showcase a true understanding of the diversity, creativity and spirit of innovation that defines Guelph.The community will know it as a place where they can find information, a gathering place and one that hosts great workshops and interesting forums. The enthusiasm shown thus far indicates that there is big demand for this type of collaborative space for change in our city.”
