Workshop: Is Developmental Evaluation Right for You?

WHEN: Tuesday, June 19th @ 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm

WHERE: The Community Room, 10 Carden Street, Guelph, ON

COST: Pay what you can

If you’re involved in running any kind of community program, chances are you have had conversations about whether your work is really making a difference.

One good way to answer this question is through program evaluation. However, traditional program evaluation doesn’t always feel like a good fit, especially for small grassroots projects, projects that evolve very quickly, or projects fuelled more by creativity and opportunity than by linear, analytic planning. Recently, a new approach to program evaluation that promises to be a better fit for these kinds of projects has emerged. It is called Developmental Evaluation.

In this informal, conversational workshop we will introduce the basic concepts of developmental evaluation and have some discussion about whether “DE” is the right approach for you. We’ll also talk about other options available to those who don’t feel like “traditional” approaches to evaluation are a good fit.

This workshop will be facilitated by the team from Taylor Newberry Consulting. We are a small company based at 10 Carden that specializes in program evaluation.

Stop by to meet them! If you are a 10 Carden member and need an extra volunteer hand, Kayla and Justin might be able to help you out…

Justin Hall, graduate of Cowichan High, June 2011, was born October 13, 1992, in Victoria B.C. He moved around the island for 9 years, finally settling in Duncan, finding his foster parents, with whom he lived with for 4 years, until he turned 19. He moved in with his best friend and lived on his own for 3 months before joining Katimavik. Justin joined Katimavik originally because he needed volunteer hours to be able to join the navy, something he has dreamed of doing for many years. His interests and hobbies include music, swimming, reading, and helping those who are in need. He is volunteering with 10 Carden because he appreciates the motivation and the ideas behind this organization. With these concepts in mind, he hopes to be able to bring some of these ideas back home with him and hopefully try to imply these beliefs in his community.

Kayla. Hello. My name is Kayla I am from Kelowna, BC. I am apart of the 6 month Katimavik program and am here to volunteer where I am needed. I “work” at Hillside and 10 Carden for Fourth Fridays. THe first thing I will tell you about is why I joined Katimavik. I wanted to help in the Canadian Environment and I think I could offer new ideas and two hands for the communities that are in need of help. Another part of why I joined Katimavik was to see more of Canada and since I have been in Guelph, I have definitely-grown roots here and would love to stay even though it’s been only 12 days. Guelph is a great place to be in terms of how green it is and in the aspect of how kind and loving the people here are. I’m hoping I can also make positive changes in Guelph such as cleaning up the streets with the Katimavik house and also having that spread into the Guelph community.

Some other information I can tell you about myself is who I was before I came to Katimavik. I graduated from Rutland Senior secondary school in 2011. Art was my main subject of interest and I have been creating for years. In grade 9 I got a piece of my artwork in the local art Gallery. I also participated in 2 mural classes at The Rotary Center for the arts. The last one of the murals resulted in my fellow classmates and I getting in the Kelowna Snap Magazine. I have always enjoyed art which is why I was inspired to be apart of Fourth Fridays. Some of the people that have driven me towards art are Vincent Van Gogh, Picasso, Blu, and Amy Sol. I am hoping I can do everything I can for my work placements and more because this is an extremely great opportunity for me to help out and more importantly learn.

One of the oldest questions in IT gets more and more complicated as new options emerge. It’s a troubling question for new and existing ventures: should you license a commercial enterprise to build an application that to meet the needs of your business or organization, or would it be better to build your own, so that you can track or manage the project as closely as possible? Have you ever paid for a commercial product only to find that it doesn’t meet all of your needs, and you’re stuck with it?

Do you have what it takes to create an IT system in-house? Build-versus-buy decision points remain the same: cost, time to market, skill sets, long-term flexibility and strategic value. We’ve assembled a panel of individuals that have tackled the problem. Experts in the IT field will outline existing and emerging trends. Together they will share their successes and challenges. You’ll likely find a wild mix of approaches that can help you assess whether you need to outsource or whether you have the capacity to build from within.

“Oh man. Six months come and gone.
Looking back on my notes about working here at 10 Carden, I can see my confidence grew quite a bit. I’ve gone from “I’m really excited that people like my input, I’m happy that I haven’t messed up!” to just listing what I’ve done and knowing how it’s helped me improve.
From beginning to end everyone’s been so great and generous, including welcoming me with a day at Hillside; which was a great welcome for a person like me who goes to as many concerts as their wallet will allow, to leaving with a subscription to Alternatives, which will aid me in being even more Environ-Mental with people back home in Montreal.

Volunteering here has unknowingly (even to me) helped out with my shyness, I very rarely would even start a conversation with a stranger before, let alone talk at length about a space and give them a tour. Seems like a small achievement, but for a person who’s heard over and over again that a lack of speaking up is something I should work on (even from teachers throughout elementary to high school, it was always on my report card,) it’s kind of a big deal. As such, I’ve also discovered that sharing my ideas at meetings and writing press releases isn’t nearly as terrifying as I had imagined.

The concept of collaboration is a large aspect of 10 Carden, and it was great to see it happen right before my eyes and to experience it personally. I got to politically geek-out multiple times, whether it was having James Gordon, Guelph’s NDP candidate start volunteering here and getting to talk with him, having the opportunity to hang out and work with Norah of The Council of Canadians, and in doing so talked food safety with Liberal MP Frank Valeriote. I helped out with Streak for Cancer, (which got me in Snap Guelph, awesome.) and got my Katimavik group involved as well. I also did some proof reading and editing at The Peak with Erin War, which I wish I could have done more of, because I am an editing nutcase. I’m glad I did get to do it though. It worked out well too, because apparently editing is War’s least favourite thing to do, and I used to find and highlight the spelling and grammar errors on my detention slips in high school.

So 10 Carden, thanks for giving me the opportunity to collaborate with so many amazing people. But for now I must bid you adieu. Emphasis on “for now”; you’ll definitely be seeing me again”
